Blind Lift Incidents
Despite our best efforts investing millions in health and safety professionals, the U.K lifting industry is still a dangerous environment for it's members and sadly on occasions, members of the public.
Even when the slinger signaller is in full view of the crane operator sometimes things still go wrong, the percentages of heavy lifting related incidents and fatalities are drastically increased when the lift goes "Blind" and even though the industry has added countermeasures over the years, this risk is still prevalent on uk construction sites.

What are the hazards?
•Site Interference
Noise from plant movements and other sources can interfere with signaller to operator radio comms.
•Signal Distortion
Unwanted radio frequency interference [RFI] can drastically effect a smooth communication channel. Wet microphones during inclement weather,
•Radio Blackspots
Signal jamming due to high security environments, low signal areas, and frequency bleed [the local taxi office] can all contribute to a communication breakdown.
•Language Barriers
"Ok, începeți să răspundeți la cererea mea de prietenie" -
"kusura bakma kardeşim seni anlamıyorum?"
•Environmental Conditions
There could be existing noise pollution in the area, close to a tannoy or airport for example?

Consequences
As you are most probably aware in the event of a serious injury or fatality on a blind lift, or any lift for that matter a number of unwanted events will now enter in to your reality, first of all the H.S.E could possibly conduct an investigation, a prohibition notice and associated costs will effect the project. In turn there will be project delays regardless, cost over runs, uncertainties, plant and/or property damage, interpersonal issues due to finger pointing e.t.c and various other safety concerns.
Ask any constructor who has had to endure the loss of an employee, a member of the public, and/ or serious damage to plant and property if they could turn the clock back? would they?
The answer would be a resounding yes. Why not avoid the situation in the first place?
